This IPAF course is designed for Managers and Supervisors who are involved in the planning and supervision of work involving MEWP’s. The course covers risk assessment and method statement writing, rescue plans, hazards and responsibilities.
COURSE ENTRY CRITERIA
As the assembly and use of MEWPs can be physically demanding, users should be physically fit and in good health and should, generally, not have problems with eyesight or hearing, heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, fear of heights/vertigo, giddiness/difficulty with balance, impaired limb function, alcohol or drug dependence or psychiatric illness.
If you have any problems with literacy or language comprehension, or have any doubts about your fitness to use MEWPs, you must bring them to the attention of your employer. This need not preclude you from using MEWPs, provided your employer conducts an assessment and is able to put into place adequate measures, to take account of any difficulties you may have
To instruct a supervisor/manager on what is required to prepare for and safely co-ordinate various types of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) within their control.
At the end of the course the candidate will:
Be aware of current legislation.
Be aware of different types and classifications of MEWPs.
Be aware of the importance of correct machine selection.
Be able to select the correct PPE for the operator.
Have a greater knowledge and awareness of the safe use and operation of MEWPs.
Be able to identify misuse and abuse of MEWPs.
Be aware of planning and maintenance considerations.
The candidate should know:
The requirements for pre-use checks and daily maintenance to be carried out prior to commencing work.
The regulations relevant to MEWP usage.
The correct emergency procedures, capacities and limitations to enable safe operation.
Correct selection of MEWP.
Correct selection of fall protection equipment.
THE PROGRAMME WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING SUBJECTS:
Content, Facilities, IPAF & PAL Card overview and Pre-course theory test.

5. ISO18878/IPAF OPERATORS’ COURSE
6. BS 8460 APPROVED CODE OF PRACTICE
7. SITE SURVEYS
8. RISK ASSESSMENT AND METHOD STATEMENTS
9. THEORY TEST
Individual written tests with explanation of pass requirements.
Failure means applicant will have to re-sit the course on another day.
10. LICENCE RENEWAL
A MEWPs for Managers qualification is valid for five years, after which candidates can renew their qualification by taking the full course.
A certificate and not a PAL Card will issued for candidates who don’t have an IPAF Operator/ Demonstrator or Instructor licence.
